India Carpet Expo

The Union Minister of Textiles, Shri Shankersinh Vaghela and the Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Shri Kamal Nath inaugurated the four-day India Carpet Expo, on February 12, 2009.

The Secretary, Ministry of Textiles, Smt.Rita Menon; the Secretary, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Shri GK Pillai; and the Chairman, Carpet Export Promotion Council, Shri Ashok Jain were also present on the occasion.

In his inaugural address, Shri Vaghela stated that India is the top exporter of handmade carpets in the world. He added that total exports had reached a record US$ 875.71 million in 2007-08, while they were at US $807.94 million in 2006-07. The top exporting destinations for India were: USA, Germany, UK, Australia, and France.

The 14th Expo was the largest fiesta of handmade woollen and silk carpets, rugs and floor-coverings. It was organized by the Carpet Export Promotion Council, under the aegis of Ministry of Textiles, Government of India. More than 200 exhibitors from Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Jammu & Kashmir displayed their trendsetting designs of handmade carpets and floor- coverings. Around 300 overseas buyers from USA, Germany, France, and Italy visited the fair.

The Expo is a world-acclaimed, established fair on handmade carpets and other floor-coverings in South East Asia, and provides a unique, business- oriented platform to importers and exporters.
