Project Vikas

Project Vikas is a holistic and scalable, five year action plan designed to enhance the competitiveness of India’s SME sector through a multi-pronged strategy, encompassing skill and capacity building, knowledge creation and dissemination, and enabling of linkages in the cluster ecosystem. The project signifies a long term commitment by Microsoft India to help the Indian SME sector address its ‘soft’ challenges and gear up to effectively face global competition.
Vision

To stimulate manufacturing competitiveness of SMEs across clusters in the country, demonstrating Microsoft’s commitment to IT innovation by facilitating a knowledge-based environment.
Initiatives

Project Vikas is bringing about change in the manufacturing segment across clusters in India through a series of programmes, events and workshops. These initiatives are making a huge positive impact on not just the businesses but also the workers involved. Project Vikas focuses on the following initiatives in each of the clusters it works in.
  • Understanding the business processes across the value chain in a cluster: For this, Project Vikas has deployed a major consulting company to conduct an extensive IT intervention study in every cluster.
  • Improving skills and creating human capital through relevant and focussed training:
    1.
Develop skill development programs for the manufacturing workforce
    2.
Conduct IT awareness sessions/seminars on wide-ranging subjects
    3.
    Develop cluster specific e-learning modules
  • Development of Knowledge Networks:
    1.
This involves setting up IT facilitation centers in collaboration with other cluster stakeholders
    2.
It also involves the development of a cluster oriented portal that provides information, business development services, e-commerce, etc.
  • Using IT to provide enhanced access to markets and address internal efficiencies: This involves developing affordable software solutions that address critical business pain points
Status

Since its inception, Project Vikas has focused on a multi-pronged approach to increase competitiveness of various clusters across India. Currently the project has been rolled out in ten clusters: Tirupur, Chennai, Pune, Ahmedabad, Surat, Agra, Jamshedpur, Hyderabad and Ludhiana across major verticals like textiles, hosiery, pharmaceuticals, auto components, gems and jewellery, leather and footwear.
Here is a snapshot of what has been achieved to date:
Cluster Development
  • Already covered 10 clusters across 5 verticals and ramping up fast
  • Launched the Project Vikas national portal, a horizontal knowledge bank for SMEs
  • Commissioned development of several cluster portals that will enhance the online footprint of the cluster and provide users with information on the cluster, business development services, e-commerce, etc.
  • Deployed sustainable E-Readiness Centers at Pune, Tirupur, Ludhiana and Agra ( two more will be ready for launch by Jan’09)
  • Touched over 2000 SMEs in the clusters with series of IT sensitisation programs
  • Engaging with banks and telcos to address affordability and access
  • Engaged with national stakeholders, such as NASSCOM and MSME to maximise outreach and impact
Enabling the IT Ecosystem
  • Mapped business processes across five verticals to understand industry/local pain points
  • Aided the development of six industry specific solutions for clusters
  • Engaged/trained over 60 local independent software vendors (ISVs)
  • Signed-up 17 local ISVs as partners to deploying cutting edge vertical solutions
  • Successfully aligned Hosted ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) solutions for the textile vertical
  • Working with national partners on three hosted solutions
